Hex 2 fragments

More hexagon fragments.....just a little Henna Drum for some drama.

And remember those first fragments from last post?  Here's what I turned them into, along with the Henna Drum.  You'll also notice the center blue fragment is new too.  That hexagon appears to be a cube!  More to come!

In addition to the Papertrey Ink hexagon die I've been mentioning, I also used a Happy Birthday die that was a gift I received from Crafter's Companion.  This card fits a standard business envelope.

To see all my hexagon posts, I've created the hexagons label.  I've also created a Reticula and Fragments label.

TTFN (as Pooh would say :-)

Hex 1 fragments - or puzzling with hexagons!

Reticula and Fragments.  A different way of talking about grids and grid patterns but inclusive of different shapes.  After all,  in the Zentangle® world our grids can be much more than squares and rectangles.  If you are considering buying the Zentangle Primer vol 1, there is a whole chapter, or lesson on Reticula and Fragments.  They've been around for awhile.  I think it started, for me at least, with this Zentangle newsletter post.  (So if you don't have the Primer, this is another very good reference document.) Eventually, I was filling in Tripoli, and ING and more recently, this hexagon card (Consider this post Hex 1A fragments) and Molygon even was lost in it's fill pattern.

But it really wasn't until I die cut a bunch of the same shape, (for me, the hexagons from a Papertrey ink cover plate die) and started filling them in and repeating the pattern, rearranging them to form different patterns, that it really began to sink in for me.  I'll warn you tho, it's extremely addicting!  And the fragments are pretty quick because of their size, so you just think, oh what if I did this? And then an hour later you have umpteen more examples!  As I was progressing, I kept thinking that I needed to get a blog post up on what I was doing, but by the time I came up for air, I had so many examples that it was too much for one post!  Hence my title.... Hex 1. I plan on quickly providing you with more examples.  (Hex 2, 3, 4 etc)
Who knew? triangles from that first fragment!
Notice the border between the triangles
or you can put them together to form a large and small triangle instead of the border

I hope you play along too.  If you're a die cutter, check your stash of dies to see if you have any repetitive geometric shapes that you could use.  But you don't need a die! How about cutting the same shape by hand. Maybe you have a stencil that has basic geometric shapes?  Squares and rectangles are pretty easy to cut by hand.  Or, what about drawing a "grid", cutting out each shape to fill and later put back together and rearrange? Or, use your bijou tiles as large fragments....you get the idea, just play around with repeating patterns, tile rotation and mirroring and just play!  Make it into a puzzle!
9 more fragments
This shows the size and that I had several of these!
And an example of fitting them together!
In case you lost the hexagons in the previous example, they're easier to see in this reticulum

Check back as I intend to put up several posts a week until I've shown you my examples.  And since I can't seem to quit, it should last at least until something else catches my eye!

Another fun example from the "Grid (Un) Locked" is The Diva Challenge #122

See you soon!

Molygon?

Look closely, it IS Molygon!  Even Bijou got into the act...  Molygon is the focus of this week's Diva Challenge and the topic of a recent Kitchen Table Tangles from Rick and Maria.  The fragment you see here in the Molygon reticulum can be attributed to Antonine.  Check out her's here. (And while you're visiting her blog, remind her that we miss her!) Color on mine from Tombow Dual Brush pens.

Hexagons

I love it when my Zentangle® and card making worlds collide.  Hexagons had been catching my eye and I purchased some hexagon dies.  As soon as I tried the first cover plate from Papertrey Ink (it is cut to exactly cover an A2 card, so 4 1/4" x 5 1/2") I knew I had to try it out as Reticula and Fragments!

Although the die exactly fits an A2 card, I trimmed this one down so I could have a red frame around the edge.

Here I'm just testing out some fragments in my bullet journal.

And below I decided my prestrung Zentangle art journal needed a page of hexagons too!  This journal is nice in that there are both prestrung pages and blanks, and of course the paper is oh, so nice.  I'm really glad that Deana kept showing me her journal, convincing me I needed one too!

And back to my BuJo (short for bullet journal, but sounds nicer don't you think?) for May's calendar.

So I said I purchased dies plural, right? Barely got around to my next set of nestabilities by Spellbinders.  They cut all these nesting sizes of hexagons.  You can cut 2 together to get a frame too, AND they emboss nicely ( see that embossed edge?). These will cut nice tiles!

Here I used one for a cut out of a card for someone special ....and didn't even include any tangling!

The stamp is by Penny Black from the transparent set "Bubbly". And the larger of the two ladybugs, is the cutest little die from Elizabeth Craft.  It's one of my favorites.  You can also see it here in one of my earliest posts..

Enjoy the day! Thanks for your kind comments, they make my day!
